If you’re looking for an easy, memorable day trip from Wilmington that mixes outdoor adventure with an indoor, kid-friendly experience, this one checks all the boxes. We headed north toward the Crystal Coast for a slow, intentional day that felt like a mini getaway, starting with a peaceful marsh hike and ending at one of North Carolina’s best aquariums.
This itinerary is great for families with kids of mixed ages, especially if you want space to explore and something educational that doesn’t feel like school.

Stop 1: Marsh Hike at Croatan National Forest
Before heading to the aquarium, we stopped at Croatan National Forest for a 1.3-mile hike through the marsh and it was the perfect way to let the kids stretch their legs after the drive. It’s a 160,000 national park and the only coastal national park in North Carolina.

This section of the forest feels quiet and wild in the best way. The flat terrain makes it manageable for kids (in strollers or wheelchairs), while the marsh views keep it interesting the entire time.
We spotted birds, berries and learned so many facts along the way. The signs are in need of updating, but there were benches along the way and beautiful boardwalks making it an enjoyable short nature trail.
Why this stop works so well with kids:
- Flat, manageable distance (no big climbs)
- Tons of wildlife spotting opportunities (birds, crabs, insects)
- Boardwalk sections that feel like an adventure
- A calm, shaded environment that doesn’t feel rushed

It’s also a great reminder that North Carolina’s coastal ecosystems go far beyond the beach, there is so much that happens in the marshland that is so important.
Tip: Bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray, especially in warmer months.

Stop 2: North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores

After the hike, we headed to the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.
This aquarium is incredibly well done: not overwhelming, a wonderful one level aquarium and perfect for kids who like to move at their own pace. It’s educational without feeling heavy and interactive without being chaotic.

Highlights kids (and parents) love:
- Touch tanks with invertebrates
- Massive shark and ocean habitat tanks
- North Carolina–focused marine life exhibits
- Indoor space (perfect for hot, cold, or rainy days)
- Indoor play section for little ones
Because we had already spent time outdoors, the aquarium felt like a natural transition.

Quick Planning Tips
- Drive time: About 1.5 hours from Wilmington
- Best ages: Toddlers through elementary (but still fun for older kids)
- What to pack: Snacks, water bottles, comfy shoes
- Make it longer: Pair with lunch in Pine Knoll Shores or Atlantic Beach, or add a quick beach stop nearby
We stopped at Pizza Forno for a delicious dinner on the way back to Wilmington.
