And just like that it’s the end of October and holiday season is about to be in full swing. We all know that soon porches will be filled with trick or treaters, candy wrappers and we will be trading rotting pumpkins for Christmas trees. BUT we can’t miss the most wonderful time of the year here in the Port City, which we all know as Fall! I’ve put together a list of places I recommend checking out this time of year.
GO TO THE BEACH
Cooler temps mean wide-open beaches and free parking! Starting now at Kure Beach, and beginning November 1, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and other local spots will follow suit. Pack a picnic, hunt for seashells, or just breathe in that salty air without the summer crowds.
It’s the locals’ favorite time of year for a reason.

WALK A NATURE TRAIL
Fall is the best time to explore Wilmington’s trails because no bugs, mild weather, and plenty of changing colors. Stroll through Abbey Nature Preserve, explore the pine forests of Carolina Beach State Park, or wander the nature trail at Smith Creek Park. Other family-friendly favorites include Halyburton Park, Greenfield Lake, and Brunswick Nature Park.
Perfect for a family walk, stroller stroll, or quiet solo escape.

A LOCAL FESTIVAL EVENT OR FESTIVAL
This is Wilmington’s busiest (and best) event season from oyster roasts and farmers markets to live music and holiday kickoffs. Don’t miss Oysterpalooza in Surf City (Nov 1), the Polish Festival (Nov 1), Cape Fear Kite Festival (Nov 7 – 9), Smart Start Fall Festival (Nov 8) or Junior Leagues Touch-A-Truck event (Nov 16).
You’ll always find something fun, festive, and family-friendly.

TAKE FAMILY PHOTOS
The light is softer, the leaves are changing, and everyone’s finally not sweating in cozy sweaters; it’s the perfect time for fall family pictures. Book a quick mini session with a local photographer, or head to any beach Abbey Nature Preserve, NHC Arboretum, Airlie Gardens, Wallace Park, Greenfield Lake, or Fort Fisher for your own DIY shoot.
Your future holiday cards will thank you.
PLAN AHEAD FOR HOLIDAY FUN

Trust me, November flies by! Grab tickets now for Wilmington’s most popular seasonal events like Enchanted Airlie, Merry & Bright at Poplar Grove, and Mike’s Farm Festival of Lights. These tend to sell out early, and you’ll feel so on top of things when December rolls around.
Future you will thank you for planning ahead.
