What Is NC Pre-K?

A few important things to know:

  • Children must typically be 4 years old by August 31

  • Spots can be limited depending on your county
  • Many counties have application deadlines early in the year
  • The program focuses on kindergarten readiness, social skills, and learning through play

What Is Head Start?

Head Start is a federally funded early childhood education program serving qualifying children ages 3–5, while Early Head Start serves infants, toddlers, and pregnant mothers. Families often love Head Start because it focuses on supporting the whole child and family.

Eligibility is primarily income-based, though foster children, homeless families, and children receiving public assistance may also qualify. To learn more about Head Start and Early Head Start programs in North Carolina, visit:

Advice for Families

If your child is approaching preschool age, start researching options earlier than you think you need to. Many parents are surprised by how early enrollment windows open.

A good first step is contacting:

  • Your local Smart Start office
  • Your county school district
  • Nearby childcare centers
  • Head Start program coordinators

Even if your child doesn’t qualify for one of these programs, there are still so many wonderful preschool, church preschool, and part-time learning opportunities. The most important thing is finding the right fit for your child and your family.
