If you’re trying to decide between a basic Sam’s Club membership and a Plus membership, the answer really comes down to how often you Sam’s Club Membership: Is Plus Worth It? A Full Breakdown for Families
If you’ve ever wondered whether upgrading your Sam’s Club membership is actually worth it, you’re not alone. At first glance, the difference between the basic Club membership and the Plus membership doesn’t seem dramatic. But when you look closer, especially through the lens of a busy family like ours, the added value becomes much clearer.
Sam’s Club currently offers two membership tiers: the standard Club membership at approximately $60 per year, and the Plus membership at approximately $120 per year. The difference between the two is $60 annually, so the real question becomes simple: can you get at least $60 in added value?
To answer that, it helps to first understand what both memberships already include.
What You Get With a Basic Sam’s Club Membership
Even the standard membership provides significant value. Members have access to bulk pricing on groceries, household essentials, diapers, wipes, paper goods, and seasonal items like beach gear and outdoor furniture. For many families, this alone can result in estimated savings of $20 to $50 or more per month depending on how often they shop.
Gas savings are another major benefit. Sam’s Club fuel stations are often priced $0.10 to $0.30 cheaper per gallon than nearby stations. For a family that drives regularly, this can translate to approximately $100 to $300 or more in annual savings.
All members also have access to the Scan & Go app, which allows you to scan items as you shop and pay directly through your phone, completely skipping the checkout line. For parents shopping with kids, this feature alone can dramatically improve the experience.
In addition, Sam’s Club offers Instant Savings, which are automatic discounts applied at checkout without the need for coupons. Basic members also receive free curbside pickup on orders over $50, making it easy to order ahead and avoid going inside the store.

What the Plus Membership Adds
The Plus membership builds on everything included in the basic tier and adds a layer of savings and convenience that becomes especially valuable for frequent shoppers.
One of the most significant benefits is the 2% cash back earned on qualifying purchases, known as Sam’s Cash. For example, if a family spends $300 per month, they would earn approximately $72 per year. At $500 per month, that increases to $120 per year. At $800 per month, the return grows to $192 per year. In many cases, this benefit alone can cover the cost of upgrading.
Shipping is another area where Plus members see clear value. While basic members often pay shipping fees, Plus members receive FREE shipping on most online orders. With typical shipping costs ranging from $5 to $12 per order, families who order one to two times per month could save between $60 and $200 per year.
Free delivery from the club is one of the most impactful perks for families. Plus members can have groceries delivered directly to their door on qualifying orders over $50. Considering delivery fees typically range from $8 to $12 per order, weekly use could result in $400 to $600 or more in annual savings. Beyond the financial value, the convenience of skipping a trip to the store is significant.
Curbside pickup is also enhanced for Plus members, as the $50 minimum is removed. This makes it easier to place smaller, more frequent orders without needing to reach a spending threshold.
Plus members also gain access to early shopping hours, which allows them to shop before the store opens to standard members. This can make a noticeable difference in reducing crowds and making shopping trips faster and less stressful.
Additional savings extend to services like the Tire & Battery Center, where Plus members often receive discounted installation and services. These savings can range from $20 to $80 per visit. Pharmacy benefits may include lower pricing on select prescriptions, while optical and hearing services offer discounts on glasses, contacts, and related care. These categories can collectively add another $50 to $150 in annual value depending on usage.
Travel is another often-overlooked benefit. Through Sam’s Club Travel, members can access discounts on hotels, rental cars, cruises, vacation packages, and even theme park tickets. Depending on the trip, this could result in $50 to $300 or more in savings. Last year we saved around $15 per ticket to Dollywood and I went on a girls trip to Universal Studios & Epic Universe saving about $50 per ticket!
I constantly search for travel deals and Sam’s always has the cheapest option!
What the Value Can Add Up To
When you look at these benefits together, the potential value of a Plus membership becomes much more clear.
A typical family might see:
- $100 to $200 from cash back
- $60 to $200 from free shipping
- $200 to $600 from delivery savings
- $100 to $300 from gas savings
- $50 to $150 from tire, pharmacy, and optical services
- $50 to $300 from travel discounts
That brings the total potential annual value to approximately $560 to $1,700 or more, depending on usage.
Even on the lower end, this exceeds the $60 difference between the two memberships.

When the Basic Membership Is Enough
The standard Club membership is still a great option for those who shop occasionally, prefer to shop in-store, and don’t rely on delivery or shipping. If you primarily use Sam’s Club for periodic stock-up trips and aren’t interested in additional services, the basic membership will likely meet your needs.
When the Plus Membership Makes Sense
The Plus membership becomes worth it when Sam’s Club is part of your regular routine. Families who shop weekly or bi-weekly, use delivery or shipping regularly, or purchase a high volume of groceries and household essentials will see the most value. It is also a strong fit for those who prioritize convenience and want to simplify errands.
The Real Difference: Time and Convenience
While the financial savings are significant, the biggest difference between the two memberships often comes down to convenience. The Plus membership reduces the number of errands you need to run, shortens shopping trips, and allows you to manage more of your household needs from home.
Instead of making multiple store runs, waiting in lines, or paying extra fees for delivery and shipping, the process becomes more streamlined and predictable.

Regardless, I really think you will be surprised at the savings you can get by shopping with Sam’s Club. Our family has both Sam’s and Costco memberships. While I like the latter, Sam’s Club has so many benefits that I just can’t turn away.
