Battle House Wilmington: A Different Kind of Adventure for Tweens, Teens & Groups

If you have a tween or teen who is notoriously hard to entertain, finding an activity that gets them off their screens and into the real world can feel like a mission in itself. That is exactly why you need to add Battle House Wilmington to your family bucket list.

This isn’t the cramped, neon arcade laser tag you might remember from your own childhood. Battle House offers an immersive, 10,000-square-foot multi-level combat arena designed for tactical laser combat. Using simulated weapons and mission-based gameplay, it gives older kids, teens, and adults the thrill of a real-life video game – requiring actual communication, strategy, and teamwork.

A Veteran-Owned Family Business

Behind the high-energy arena is a proud family story rooted in military service. The original Battle House was founded in Illinois by Air Force veteran Doug Huckbody. In 2015, his son Darek Huckbody brought the concept to North Carolina.

Darek’s background is uniquely tied to the local community; he served as an Army Black Hawk helicopter pilot stationed at Fort Bragg before flying helicopters for the Wilmington Police Department. That dedication to service carries over directly to the arena floor. In fact, about half of the Wilmington staff are veterans, active reserves, or National Guard members working alongside high school and college students. Darek and his team work tirelessly to find exceptional crew members who know how to keep things fun, safe, and engaging. It pays off: the vast majority of Google and Yelp reviews explicitly highlight how awesome the staff is.

Epic Birthdays, Large Groups, & Weekend Fun

While it is an absolute sweet spot for weekend family fun, Battle House has earned a reputation for hosting the best birthday parties in town. Here is a quick breakdown of how they handle everything from small squads to massive parties:

  • Capacity & Large Events: A standard high-stakes battle maxes out at 36 players at one time on the field. However, if you are planning a massive celebration or corporate outing, they regularly host groups of 100+ players. For these large crowds, events are booked as 2- to 3-hour blocks where players rotate. While one group is in the back hunting opponents, the other groups are up front in the lobby eating pizza and running their own team-building activities.
  • The Gameplay Timeline: Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for check-in. This gives your team plenty of time to fill out waivers, split into squads, and use the restroom before the briefing room doors open. Game sessions run in strict hour-long increments, with booking options ranging from a fast-paced 1 hour to an intense 2 hours and 15 minutes, all the way up to a 3.5-hour “play all day” marathon ticket.
  • The Birthday Party Room: If you book a birthday package, you can add a 30-minute private party room slot immediately following your final game so you can cut the cake, open presents, and tally up the final team scores.

Over 50+ Tactical Game Modes

Smaller groups of 6 will naturally cycle through scenarios faster than a massive army of 36, but a typical 1-hour game will comfortably get you through 3 to 5 different missions played on both offense and defense. Because games are objective-based, the faster your team coordinates, the more game types you get to experience. With over 50+ different game modes available, no two visits are ever exactly the same. Some fan-favorite scenarios include:

  • Domination & Capture the Flag
  • Manhunt & Team Elimination
  • Search and Destroy
  • VIP Escort & Rescue the Hostage
  • Bank Heist

What Wilmington Parents Might Not Realize

While the core age group is between 7 and 13 years old (6-year-olds are welcome too, they just need a paying parent playing alongside them), the real secret weapon of Battle House is Grandma and Grandpa.

Darek notes that when grandparents attend a birthday party and get talked into joining the mission, they often have more fun than the kids. Even if they have absolutely zero interest in video games like Call of Duty or Fortnite, the tactical, puzzle-solving nature of the team objectives makes it an incredibly fun, multi-generational bonding experience.

Supporting Wilmington Schools and PTA Communities

Battle House is deeply committed to giving back to the local community. If you are a PTA parent, educator, or school organizer, they offer tailored in-house Spirit Nights to help raise funds for local schools. They also frequently provide donations for silent auctions and raffles to support neighborhood organizations and community fundraisers.

What to Wear Before You Go

Athletic attire and closed-toe shoes are an absolute must. You will be moving, hiding, and strategizing across multiple levels, so leave the sandals and dress clothes at home.

Before You Go

If you’re looking for something to do with a group of older kids, planning a tween or teen birthday party, or just want to find a Wilmington activity that feels a little different, Battle House Wilmington is one to add to the list.

And if your kids come home arguing over who had the highest score, just remember: you created the competition. You don’t have to referee it!
